Hide And Seek Lyrics
Performed by Imogen HeapReview The Song (976)
where are we?
what the hell is going on?
the dust has only just begun to form
crop circles in the carpet
sinking feeling
spin me round again
and rub my eyes,
this can't be happening
when busy streets a mess with people
would stop to hold their heads heavy
hide and seek
trains and sewing machines
all those years
they were here first
oily marks appear on walls
where pleasure moments hung before the takeover,
the sweeping insensitivity of this still life
hide and seek
trains and sewing machines (oh, you won't catch me around here)
blood and tears (hearts)
they were here first
Mmmm whatcha say,
Mmm that you only meant well?
well of course you did
Mmmm whatcha say,
Mmmm that it's all for the best?
of course it is
Mmmm whatcha say?
Mmmm that it's just what we need
you decided this
oooh whatcha say?
Mmmm what did'cha say?
ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cut outs (paper word cut outs)
speak no feeling no I don't believe you (I don't believe you)
you don't care a bit,
you don't care a bit
(hide and seek)
ransom notes keep falling out your mouth
mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cut outs
(hide and seek)
speak no feeling no i don't believe you
you don't care a bit,
you don't care a (you don't care a) bit
(hide and seek)
oh no, you don't care a bit
oh no, you don't care a bit
(hide and seek)
oh no, you don't care a bit
you don't care a bit
you don't care a bit

Love your reviews, thanks! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/21/12
Hello, I've read many of your reviews and I really loved learning more about the way this song touched a lot of you to express your deepest emotions/experiences/points of view, because in the end we all have a lot to deal with and we all at any random moment in our life can relate to the certain pain this song exerts and take a different meaning from it. And since I had been listening to it for so long I thought that that was just what it was meant to do...untill I became a father and I started feeling the real pressure of what the modern world wants from me in order to provide for my kids so that one day I could have them end up in the exact same position that I am in right now...and then I started looking at that concept through the eyes of my children, do I really want to sell myself to eventually take away that innocence that makes them so magical in my life? Do I have a choice? Did we eventually end up losing the essence of what we really need, to a system that was put up a long time before we were even mentioned of? Did we lose track of the big picture? Is this really what's best? And yes...who the fuck decided this? I don't know about the rest of you but as this came to mind it became clear to me that all those years, at the heart of all my problems, there had always been a bigger issue that we seem to ignore because we were born into it and have become so oblivious to the great effect it has on our lives. It has limited us people who are born with an unlimited imagination to live lives we never really chose to live...So now what? Should I give up? Should I try harder? I think I'm gonna try to remember and hold on to my dreams and start looking at my life through my kids eyes because at least that way, things still seem to make sense.
Relates to all | Reviewer: Nico | 1/12/12
When I hear this song I picture an old house. Maybe a house a group of college friends or a young couple shared, where countless memories and pictures filled each room, but time passed and they all found their own place. This is returning to that house. furniture gone and it looks empty and unfamiliar.
(Where are we?
What the hell is going on?
The dust has only just begun to form
crop circles in the carpet
sinking feeling...)
This says that it has not been too long since they all moved out.
(spin me round again
and rub my eyes,
this can't be happening
when busy streets a mess with people
would stop to hold their heads heavy
hide and seek
trains and sewing machines
all those years
they were here first)
The sudden realization what all used to be is now gone. Where people that were so busy now don't know what to do, and are ashamed of forgetting. (Hide and Seek) was the 'play time' they all had together and how they all changed with the fashion, and had different destinations.(Trains and Sewing machines, they were here first.)
('Crop circles in the carpet.' From the legs of the couch or furniture) The pictures of all of them together are off the walls. (Oily marks appear on walls where pleasure moments hung before...)
The rest of the song is generalizing everything that happened. The good, the sweet, the bad, and the ugly. A part of each member is feeling both a want to go back to that time again, the other is telling them to 'get over it' and 'move on'.
_______________________________________________
Also, it can also be a reflection of someones entire life. We first played 'Hide and Seek', as children... before us, were Trains, before them were sewing machines. The photos capturing us growing, and the memories of blood, tears, and love.
Her Own Words | Reviewer: Buttershark | 1/2/12
Heap states that her song lyrics come from personal experience, but are not straightforwardly confessional. She has stated "Most of the time, the lyrics are kind of like my secret messages to my friends or my boyfriend or my mum or my dad. I would never tell them that these songs are about them or which specific lyric is about somebody. Often, when I sit down to write a lyric, it is in the heat of the moment, and something has just happened." I suppose that if you attempt to really know these lyrics, you'd have to take it to the source. Her mind. It's personal, but shared with the world. She never really meant anything to the world by them, but they mean something to HER nonetheless. ^_^

YEP...I GOT IT | Reviewer: jSON | 12/18/11
IT COULD ALSO BE ABOUT A PERSON THAT KNEW ANOTHER PERSON'S PAIN AND FRUSTRATION AND HOW TERRIBLE IT WAS TO LOSE THAT PERSON TO A CORRUPT BLAMEFUL SOCIETY. I THINK THE SONG IS MORE A EULOGY...A CRY FOR CHANGE. AND THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ATROCITIES REFUSE TO LISTEN AND TAKE BLAME FOR THEIR MISTAKES. IDK....ITS JUST THE HYPOTHETICAL MUSIC VIDEO I HAVE IN MY HEAD EVERYTIME I HEAR THIS SONG.
For the Reviewer Blah | Reviewer: Blah_is_dumb... | 10/17/11
I get what you were trying to say, but you said it in the most close-minded manner. It kind of made you sound very... uhm... stupid. What he meant was that songs shouldn't be about what the writer intended it to mean, it's about what the listener perceives the meaning to be. Don't take anyone else's word on it, just take it in and let it mean whatever you believe it to mean as an individual. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder kind of thing.
Stop trying to make songs into something: | Reviewer: Blah | 10/7/11
Just because a song sounds like it has meaning, doesn't mean we need to seek it. You make music personal for you. This is a great song, and it doesn't need to be about anything specific to be awesome. Just listen to the music, and quit trying to be intellectual.
Inhuman beginning of America | Reviewer: Hannah May | 9/1/11
'all those years they were here first' - native americans, 'trains and sewing machines' - american industry, 'you only meant well? of course you did' - they were only uncivilized heathens and 'its all for the best' 'its just what we need' for the prosperity of america. 'ransom notes' presented to a people that couldn't understand our language or what they had done so wrong to recieve them. 'blood and tears' 'sweeping insensitivity of this still life''the takeover'. How could america the 'land of the free' be founded so unjustly? 'you dont care a bit'. 'this cant be happening'... this is my interpretation of this song and its sort of deep... with the world how it is today with all its technology and flashy lights and the obliteration of rain forests and natural resources... maybe the native americans, with they're simple way of living and appreciation for the earth, were more wise than what we gave them credit for. yea i know... 'hippie go hug a tree' right? you know what i don't care. if the human race was to be completely wiped off the face of the earth, i believe the universe would take a big sigh of relief because of the way we abuse this beautiful place. what can you do, individually, to show some respect and love to make it a better place? i know its a 'review' but i just wanted to share. thanks for reading
Art and it's meaning. | Reviewer: JB | 8/26/11
Art truly is beauty in the eye of the beholder, but that doesn't erode the original inspiration and purpose the artist had when creating the piece. To say that this song has special meaning to you, and evokes more than the original artist felt at the time of inspiration is fine, but it doesn't change the intrinsic inspiration and direction of the song. I think it's valuable to understand the writer's intent even after a piece has taken on additional meaning on a personal level.
@Keith G | Reviewer: Vernon Miller | 8/19/11
You know Keith, i was almost really bummed to read the lyrics.. it was heartbreaking actually. This song really touches me and my girflfriend's hearts because we had been listening to it at the start of our FREINDSHIP and now as a couple, it really hits us hard. I love the song, everytime i hear it i get the warmest feeling, this is THAT song that i will never forget, that will always be in my heart like your saying.
I realized that the words mean nothing after reading your comment. I was so relieved, because its true! the reason that imogen heap wrote the song doesnt really matter to us, the listener, becuase its not supposed to apply to us. so regardless of how this song could possibly be one about loss, in my mind it will always resemble love and connection. thanks again keith!
Review about Hide And Seek------ Performed by Imogen Heap | Reviewer: mali-G | 7/22/11
This song is so beautiful....there are many ways one can interpret this song...some say its bout the9/11,a break up,i personally think its bout two people...could b a couple, could b brother nd sister, and they built this relationship and then one of them decides to end his/hers own life nd especially the"hmm whatca say....you don't care a bit part"the other person is left heartbroken...I'd know because my brother tried to commit suicide...but he survived I'm grateful that he's alive but I felt so betrayed...but anyway that's just my comment.....anyway no matter what it means it still remains an awesome song..
Reviewing a review- @Kevin G | Reviewer: Fred S. | 7/11/11
This entire album is just a masterpiece of intricacies- containing bits and pieces I could never imagine being capable of doing (as an amateur). Then for Hide and Seek to be acapella...man. I am blown away each time I listen. When I went to see what interpretations may be available, or if she even provides one, I stopped once I read Kevin's review. I may never look for an artists meaning again after reading your review dude. That was very powerful and it blew may away almost as much as listening to the song. Thank you for that...truly an awesome and elegant statement to remember. I have my own interpretation that formed in my mind and you know what? I like it just the way I understand it and your words pay homage to all artists...that we can each take from a great song our own personal bit is what makes it live and breath.
Once again...I like how I interpret the song...you gave me permission (so to speak) to keep it as such. Which means there is no need to share what that is...you laid out a blueprint for others to imagine on their own.
P.S. If you aren't reviewing professionally...you should be. :-) Peace!!
A real place | Reviewer: Keith G | 6/28/11
Look at all the reviews. Well... maybe not all of them. There are a lot, over the years. So many people try to decide what Imogen Heap must be talking about in the lyrics. Are they right? Does it matter?
When an artist puts a work out there into the air, into the light, it owes its existence to her, or him; but it no longer belongs to them. If the song is a good one, it enjoys and appreciates that "birth," and pays homage to its maker each time it is witnessed/seen/heard. But a true work of art is also born again inside of each person who discovers it, who feels it. What it means to each of us becomes important to the song, the painting, the poem. It is not just sitting there; it is doing something, for us. It - and we - are changing by having discovered each other. We discover the song, the painting, and it works hard to provide for us what we strive to find in it: our own thoughts, dreams, hopes. The art discovers an audience; and we, each of us, literally breathes new life into it.
A dead painting, no longer seen by anyone; a dead song heard by no one; have no sustaining life because no one could see themselves in them. But one that is alive is alive because it speaks to us in our own language. We get it... and so we have it. It lives for us, and through us.
This song. It means things to its author, for sure. It means different things to each person who gives their interpretation of what it means. The fact that there are so many different interpretations speaks to just how rich a gift the song really is.
On top of what the song "means," there's the music. I'm a musician; I honestly hear the music a hundred times before the words even reach my ears. And it is her music - the stunningly integrated whole of the concept, the execution, the melody, the harmony, the phrasing, the "effects", the pacing, the timbre - that just wipes me out. It grips and it doesn't let go.
There are not so many songs like that, at least not for me. A hundred, maybe two, out of all the thousands and thousands and thousands that I've heard.
So this song is more than a song; it's a place that we've been to. It's a place that we know, and a place that we both love and dread. It's a real place, in our hearts, and beyond us. As the poet e. e. cummings put it, in his poem, "maggie and milly and molly and may":
may came home with a smooth round stone
as small as a world and as large as alone
That's the place I mean. That's where this song lives.
Keep thou opinions to thyself | Reviewer: Justin | 6/3/11
What all of you are writing is opinion's of what the song is about not an actual review of the song itself (some of you might have but Im assuming none did without including an opinion) lets keep this about review people not what you think she got inspiration from... To me this song has depth it has feeling and a creative use of either editing or filter to make a very unique and lovable song. Thumbs up!
slavery maybe, lost love definetly | Reviewer: The Ghost | 5/28/11
well maybe youre all right.we are slave to authority, historical events, evolution of technoligy,a lost love.it could be a combination of these.she might be talking about how we are slaves to technoligy, and how in this busy world caused by the endless tech evolution she has lost someone.ofcourse it could be something else entirely.thats just what i got out of your guys' answers.
