Here in My Room Lyrics - Incubus

Review The Song (36)

This party is old and uninviting.
Participants all in black and white.
You enter in full-blown technicolor.
Nothing is the same after tonight.

If the world would fall apart
In a fiction-worthy wind,
I wouldn't change a thing now that you're here.

Your love is a verb
Here in my room.
Here in my room.
Here in my room.
Your love is a verb
Here in my room.
Here in my room.
Here in my room.

You enter and close the door behind you.

Now show me the world as seen from the stars.
If only the lights would dim a little,
I'm wary of eyes upon my scars.

If the world would fall apart
In a fiction-worthy wind,
I wouldn't change a thing now that you're here.

Your love is a verb
Here in my room.
Here in my room.
Here in my room.
Your love is a verb
Here in my room.
Here in my room.
Here in my room.

Pink tractorbeam into your incision
Head spinning as free as Dervish's whirl
I came here expecting next to nothing
So thank you for being "that" kind of girl.

That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.
That kind of girl.

Sex with a prostitute. | Reviewer: Corvus | 12/20/13

This song is about an ugly boy that is going to have sex with a prostitute.

The company is old and it is uninviting. He didn't expected anything. But then she enters the door and started to make love. She is working, so thats the verb. For him, she is as beautiful as a star and he is worried about his scars. So he wish to dimm the light. At the end, he is thankfull for that (kind of) girl, giving him that feelings.

love is definatly a verb | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/26/11

This song is about sex but not just sex. it's about being awaken to a new way to love. his existance was stale and then in walks in his idea woman. she is all he never expected and always wanted. love is a verb here in my room. ofcorse sex but also love is happening. he didnt just "score" he found love.falling in love is the verb just as much as the act of sex. he's been hurt before and he's worried she'll see how scared he is(warry of eyes upon my scars). And "that kind of woman" means she is cofident and knows what she wants. Let me assure you just because she slept with him on the first meeting doesnt make her a whore. it makes her human. have you seen brandon boyd? also i dated him and as with any of his art he wants it to mean anything you need it to mean.

It has so many layers of meaning like every other Incubus song! It goes as deep as your willing to take it. Sometimes it's amazing to just sit and listen to there music and let your mind wander. They're the only band that can really make me feel every kind of emotion in 2 minutes and 30 seconds haha

loveeeee | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/25/10

this is an amazing song. my boyfriend gave me all the incubus cds on my ipod, and i love them. the sing has a great voice, and the lyrics are so deep. this song in particular gets to me because it's so.. well, it reminds me of my experiences.

YO Let me explain | Reviewer: derek stefanick | 10/18/10

yes this song is clearly about sex giving by the line your love is a verb here in my room and followed by the last verse
but its not just any sex
its about losing virginity as in the lines
Nothing is the same after tonight
Now show me the world as seen from the stars
also
Head spinning as free as Dervish's whirl
I came here expecting next to nothing
which deal with him climaxing and that he came to this party just looking to atleast hook up with a girl not actually have sex
as seen in the line
You enter in full-blown technicolor
a girl catches his attention and we all know that feeling at a party a girl either walks in or passes by that we all wanna hook up with at least
now then the line
Pink tractorbeam into your incision
clears a different way of saying a dick going into well you know
and the last line in that verse
So thank you for being "that" kind of girl.
deals with him thanking her for the great sex and that she was willing to take his virginity even though it was their first time and they didnt know eachother most likely
since most girls who meet a guy for first time and turns out to be a virgin try to talk the guy out of it unless they are really slutty
also in the chorus

If the world would fall apart
In a fiction-worthy wind,
I wouldn't change a thing now that you're here.
meaning that now she has agreed to have sex he wouldnt change anything and its something he was looking for, for a while and because he is finally getting it anything could happen as long as nothing happens before the act of sex happens

Just a comment | Reviewer: Marcus | 10/13/10

Now that I read the lyrics as I listen to the song, I realize even further just how elagant, and eloquent this song truly is.
It is a seductively beautiful ballad.
Brandon Boyd is so amazing at writing.

Amazing. | Reviewer: Blah | 6/18/10

In my opinion, Boyd wants everyones first impression to be that the song is about making love. But I think that theres a second layer of meaning, one thats much more personal. He's talking about a girl who can make him feel like no one else has. And thats a very different feeling for anyone listening to the song. Hence the lengthy arguments.

Don't overanalyze. | Reviewer: Hayden | 8/19/09

First off, I agree that the song is amazing and that Boyde is a genius.
That tidbit aside, I wanna say that some people are looking too deeply into this.
This song is very obviously about sex or "making love", hence the "your love is a verb" line.

The second verse clearly describes a confident woman seducing a less confident or self conscious man. That verse cannot possibly be about anything but the act of having sex.

The last verse is not only clearly about the act of sex as well, but it's even more graphic in its imagery.
"Pink tractor beam into your incision..." What else can that be about other than penetration?
"I came here expecting next to nothing, so thank you for being "that kind of girl." When he says "here", it could mean the party (Yes, I do think that the reference to a party is at least in part very literal) or he came to a particular situation (being alone with the girl in his room, perhaps) "expecting next to nothing." How many of us have never been in a similar situation, where we go to a place or meet with someone, and we really have no expectations or even bad expectations, but then something wonderful happens? In this case, he got laid. Maybe it was more than "getting laid" in the grander scheme of things. Maybe it was amazing love making. Maybe it was transcending, but at the end of the day, it was the act of having sex or making love.

But of course, we can all make our own interpretations for music. That's the beauty of art, the fact that we all make it what we want it to be. I just think that sometimes things are looked into more deeply than intended. There's obvious beauty and intensity and passion in describing a night or love making? I feel like some people trivializing such experiences when they say that the song cant possibly be this shallow in its meaning. I think that this is exactly what the song is about and I don't think that it's at all shallow. There is beauty in simplicity. Less is more. I can think of 100 more clich├ęs, but you guys the point.

this song is many things, but not empty!! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/21/09

"Love is a verb" is brilliant. It means that the love that we ALL are at the very core of our being finally has a way to express itself! This girl is not just f*cking him, she's ENLIGHTENING him!!! "the party old and univiting black and white" part is a metaphor for somebody sleep-walking, going through the motions of life on autopilot. She enters in full blown techincolor, (alive! awake! full of presence truth wisdom and of course Love!) and that Love is about to overflow, and be EXPRESSED with him!! He can now see the world as "from the stars", from the ONE HEART and ONE MIND, from a UNIVERSAL standpoint. he is forever changed. There is no going back, and even if that old "world-were" (the way he saw things previously) was to fall apart, he wouldn't change a thing because he is now ALIVE and AWAKE and realizes that everything else but that LOVE was all just an illusion. So he's okay with all of it just blowing away back to the "FICTION" from where it came. He now knows the TRUTH which is LOVE. (and again I am not speaking of Romantic love, but rather bob marley's kind of ONELOVE)So he say's "Thank you for being 'that' kind of girl" (the kind who sees through the illusion and by fully being and expressing her self aka,Love -since we all ARE love- allows others to see clearly as well!) This is a DEEP DEEP song. definitely not just about Sex!!! not by any means <3

i hope i'm wrong..this song is too good to be so empty. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/18/09

the fact that he repeatedly refers to love as a verb means that it is not a feeling, just a word to describe the action of having sex. it proves there is nothing behind it, that there is no feeling. the sex may be phenomenal, but it is not everlasting love. maybe it changed him by giving him a different perspective on women/sex/life, but one can never know. this song has just always meant so much more to me. i want someone to prove this wrong and save my fragile heart from the harsh interpretation of my mind. nevertheless, i can rest well knowing that boyd is a true poet, for he can take a casual encounter and turn it into something beautiful.

love | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/28/09

i think there is a big difference between making love and sex. making love is commmonly reffered to in music, and is only a horrible thing when poeple make it that. these lyrics are much deeper than people realize. brandon boyde is a genious.

Incubus is fiction-worthy | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/26/09

"Pink tractorbeam into your incision,".. the guy definitely sings about intercourse. everything else can have as subjective of a meaning as any.

Personally, I'm into these lyrics "If the world were to fall apart in a fiction-worthy wind, I wouldn't change a thing," leaving "now that you're here" out; that's optional. I love Incubus.

now love is a verb... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/4/09

It doesn't really mean a physical action, so much as "love is a verb" means more that love has surpassed being a feeling, it's something more, its and action, a pure emotion, flowing in and out of you, a living breathing thing.

awesum song | Reviewer: laura | 3/24/09

I agree with all of you who say this song is not only about the sex, because its really not... "Nothing is the same after tonight" is deff not talking about some random hookup, besides the "party" thing doesnt necessarily mean a PARTY it could also mean like the life his living thats gettin "old and uninviting" and then the girl comes and changes all his world around.

What it means. | Reviewer: Chris | 2/26/09

There are subtle hints in this song that allude to a meaning a bit different meaning than a party hook-up.

From what I gather, the song is about a guy who has been hurt - physically or emotionally, and hasn't found love. Then when he sees this girl, who treats him differently, he feels more complete, wishes that things would never change.

"This party is old and uninviting
Participants all in black and white.
You enter in full blown technicolor
Nothing is the same after tonight."

Everyone is the same. But when he sees her, he sees something special about her.

"You enter and close the door behind you
Now show me the world as seen from the stars.
If only the lights would dim a little,
I'm wary of eyes upon my scars"

Literally pertaining to the fact that he has been scarred before. He's self-of that fact, but as the next paragraph will show, she's different. The fact that the feeling shared between them is described as "showing them the world seen from the stars" obviously means that it is something truly extraordinaire and special.

"I came here expecting next to nothing
So thank you for being that kind of girl."

He went expecting not to find this significant other, this person who seems him for what he is under his scarred self. Hence, "thank you for being that kind of girl." He certainly is not referring to "that kind of girl" that puts out.

Not saying that it isn't about sex, "pink tractor beam into your incision" is a pretty clear illusion to sex, but obviously the song is about more than them having sex, it's about love.

"Head spinning as free as Dervishs' whirl"
I'd say this would be an excellent way to describe intimacy with someone you're really connected with.
Again, I can neither confirm nor deny that this is Incubus' true meaning to the song, but I like to think that this is what it's about.
