Happiness By The Kilowatt Lyrics

Review The Song (18)Print the Lyrics
So this is continuous happiness
You know, I always
Imagined it something more
With the right drapes, the right paints
The right frames, this could really work
What a great day to spend indoors

Wake, wake up, wake, wake up
Wake, wake up, wake, wake up
Wake, wake up, wake, wake up
Wake, wake up, wake, wake up

In a hail of sparks
And a tangle of wires
Everything went wrong

So where has all the day gone?
And why are my lungs aching when I breathe?
Is there something wrong with the heat?
Why am I so cold?
And my heart feels sick
And it hurts when I speak
And this is not what I hoped for

Wake, wake up, wake, wake up
Wake, wake up, wake, wake up
Wake, wake up, wake, wake up
Wake, wake up, wake, wake up

Was this what we hoped for?

Was this what we hoped for?
Was this what we hoped for?

Was this what we hoped for?

Was this what we hoped for?
Was this?

Review about Happiness By The Kilowatt

The Euphio Question | Reviewer: Dale | 7/3/09

This song is nothing to do with relationships or the pitfalls of materialism or any of the below suggestions. Although I agree, you could read it that way if you were unaware of it's true meaning.

However, if you read the short story by Kurt Vonnegut, titled "The Euphio Question" (it is featured in the collection of his short stories called 'welcome to the monkey house') There is no doubt that this song is about that story. The central lines "in a hail of sparks and a tangle of wires" and the title itself "happiness by the kilowatt" are directly taken from this story.

I'm not gonna explain the plot, look it up yrself if you're interested.

Alexisonfire never cease to amaze me with the wide variety of things they get their inspiration and lyrics from. This is another beautifully crafted song with some very interesting lyrics.

yeaah | Reviewer: jack | 4/7/09

so, i've read through these comments and i think everyones got the basic idea, however i think that the title "happiness by the kilowatt" and the lines " In a hail of sparks
And a tangle of wires
Everything went wrong "
must link up somehow, there is a fair bit of talk about electricity, wether this is commenting on how a relationship flows like electricity, but at the same time can be incredibly dangerous, or wether it means electric goods as in phones, computers ect setting an example of how to be happy i'm unsure of
one think i do know is that this song is really touching

Just one opinion | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/26/09

I think that when Dallas says, "with the right drapes, the right paint.... this could really work" I think its a sarcastic look at a relationship. Maybe the character of the song was in a "picture perfect relationship" (like was metioned before) and it was just a cover, not really what he wanted.

my view. | Reviewer: Hayden. | 2/18/09

I love this song.
and i agree with some of the comments about its' lyrics below me.
I, too, think it has to do with relationships somewhat.
I think that it's as if the narrator has all these things that should qualify him to be happy. He doesn't understand why he can't seem to find the happiness he's dreamead of.
But i think that its because of a past love.
It's like nothing will be as good as it should, because he is left so empty from a perfect love gone wrowg.
I don't only think this song has to to with love and relationships though.
i think its just the fact that he can't find happiness in anything; he wants to be happy so much, but he's incapable of doing so. and he's telling himself to wake up out of this daze.
to find true happiness.

I've interepretted this song many different ways.
It has a million meanings to me.
And I really relate to it =/

hmm... | Reviewer: Anonymous | 1/31/09

It seems as though this song is about life in general. You can make it up with all these material things that they say will make you happy, but really you need something more, and when he asks why he is so cold, it's because materalism can't give you warmth in your life, and when he blames the heat, he tries to solve his emotional problems with material solutions, which the world says is what you hope for, but is it?

taken literally, i think this was a "picture perfect" relationship gone wrong. i think quite literally, they got so caught up in looking perfect that the narrator, actually got a serious injury that leaves him helpless, and his wife doesnt love him now because the injury affected him greatly, and shes not taking care of him because shes ashamed.

great lyrics | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/13/08

i believe that you can't take a literal approach to lyrics such as these. personally i viewed the song in the exact opposite way to lili. rather than himself being in love and the other person throwing it away, i got the vibe that it was actually him who was not entirely infatuated. for example, the opening few lines
"So this is continuous happiness
You know, I always imagined it something more".

basically if you imagine he is in a relationship with a girl who is perfect in every way... yet he is not happy, and this is imensly confusing for him as he questions why he feels unhappy with such a aesthetically perfect relationship. although he reafirms that something is not right with the lines
"With the right drapes, the right paints
The right frames, this could really work" and asserts his still remaining unhappiness/depression/confusion with the following line
"What a great day to spend indoors"
as for the lines "wake up" i believe he is telling himself to metaphorically 'wake up' and accept that he is not happy and move on - the struggle i think comes from him not wanting to hurt the person who loves him, for no apparent reason: none that he can explain anyway.

although i agree with anonymous | 1/26/2008 in that the lines
In a hail of sparks
And a tangle of wires
Everything went wrong
are key lines in the song and represent a significant point of action, i believe this is the point at which he at least tries to act upon his macabre feelings and finds out that its not so easy to live without this person as he had thought it would be. he starts to wonder why, if acting on these feelings was the correct thing to do, it hurts so much in the aftermath of the relationship breakup. que "and this is not what i hoped for"
then he turns the question to the one he does/doesn't love in desperation to see if they are feeling as bad as him.

very over thought i know, but this is what i get from the song... probably because i have experienced this before, and the song just reminded me.

great song, great lyrics. love dallas

love love love it | Reviewer: LiLi | 3/12/08

I love love love this song.

I think...
when he says "why am I so cold" i think Dallas is trying to get the point across that the one he loved isn't with him anymore. and the first verse of the song is saying if everything in his relationship would have been a little bit better, the relationship he had could have worked, but for her it wasnt like that. but for him, he would have delt with all the harships to be with her. thats why his heart "feels sick" and it "hurts when i breathe". he's heartbroken

and when he keeps saying "wake up, wake up"
i think hes saying he wants her to wake up and realize what a good thing she had and how he just really wants her to see that.

Meaning | Reviewer: Peaks | 2/26/08

The song pretty much is about a guy trying to do his house up to fool himself, his partner and others that they are happy by making it appear perfect with material things. then the chorus "wake up...etc." has a metaphorical meaning to start with, telling him to "wake up" to himself that it wont solve anything, then when the screaming starts "In a hail of sparks, And a tangle of wires, Everything went wrong." implying the man has had an accident, presumably electrocution, and he loses conciousness(Or dies =\ ). giving a literal meaning to the "wake up....etc" in the chorus, which would be the partner pleading for him to regain conciousness. and when he does(maybe in spirit form?) he notices alot of time has passed and that he is hurt "So where has all the day gone?
And why are my lungs aching when I breathe?" and the lines "Is there something wrong with the heat?
Why am I so cold?" maybe he is dead? not too sure either that or he is in shock. "And my heart feels sick,And it hurts when I speak" electocution can cause serious weakness in the heart, and the hurts wen i speak bit a bit self explanitory, with any serious injury it usually hurts to speak. and the final statement "And This Is Not What I Hoped For" that instead of material things helping it has ultimately caused the mans death/or near death, however you want to look at it. whatever it means i love this song soooo much so i thought it was worth sharing my opinion on it =]

Carbonmonoxide poisioning | Reviewer: Anonymous | 2/20/08

Personally, I think this song is about the pitfalls of materialism. Buying a new house, doing it up and having nice things is supposed to make you happy. But after all that, he's wondering where the hours have gone and why he feels so sick. 2 words - Carbonmonoxide Poisoning.
