Holy Mother Lyrics - Eric Clapton
Review The Song (12)
Holy Mother, where are you?
Tonight I feel broken in two.
I've seen the stars fall from the sky.
Holy Mother, can't keep from crying.
Oh I need your help this time,
Get me through this lonely night.
Tell me please which way to turn
To find myself again.
Holy Mother, hear my prayer,
Somehow I know you're still there.
Send me please some peace of mind;
Take away this pain.
I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait any longer.
I can't wait, I can't wait, I can't wait for you.
Holy Mother, hear my cry,
I call your name a thousand times.
I've felt the hunger running through my soul;
All I need is a hand to hold.
Oh I feel the end has come,
No longer my legs will rise.
You know I would rather be
In your arms tonight.
When my hands no longer play,
My voice is still, I fade away.
Holy Mother, there we'll be
Lying in, safe within your arms.

Beloved Prayer | Reviewer: Sherilyn | 5/26/14
I opened up a new CD I had laying about when I got home from a trip to spend time with my long-distance love partner . . . and found he'd been living with another woman while we were apart. This is the first song I heard and the first time I heard it. It is an exquisite song and was something to hang onto at the time.

Dave Kennard: You named what it is about. THE BAND´S piano player
Richard Manuel was depressive and a very heavy drinker. He hanged himself in a Florida motel room after a concert the night before.
Ominous remarks to his bandmates weren´t understood at the time.
So this is what he may have thought before, hopefully, finding peace.
I found out just today after listening to Robbie Robertson´s " Fallen Angel ", which is about Manuel, too.
"Cursed/ Called" | Reviewer: Dave Kennard | 6/12/09
I believe that it is "I've cursed your name a thousand times". In my opinion, this lyric is a song about a man who has been through strife, and now is looking for some means of salvation. The lyric "Holy mother, hear my cry,
I've cursed your name a thousand times.
I've felt the anger running through my soul;
Holy Mother can't keep control" is about realizing that although he has cursed the holy mother, he is now ready for the salvation he could receive.
Also, I believe that it is "All I need is your hand to hold", not "Holy mother, can't keep control"

I just listened to EC live at Hyde Park. The word is without doubt "cursed". Makes sense that when you think about it. He is not cursing Holy Mother in the song, simply confessing that he had in the past; I'm sure as a result of pain in his life.
cursed | Reviewer: royphilip | 3/21/09
I don't get it. Is it because curse is such a negative word to be used with holy? If you follow through to the next verse or line.... it is an admission of the author doing a "bad thing" and explaining why. "Called" does not belong to the entire thought of the paragraph. It does not make it logical.
The author is asking/pleading for an audience with a holy being despite his actions and his anger.

I have just read everyones comment and would like to give my input on this song. Reffering to the whole "Cursed/called" issue, I have seen many sites that have "Called" instead of "Cursed". At this moment no one is really sure what the lyric actually is. Although I would like to note that I have a copy of "Eric Clapton and Friends" at home. Clapton himself sings "I've cursed your name a thousand times". But Im still not too sure.
The original | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/18/08
I would like to draw your attention to the original version of the song. If you hear the original version in stead of the one with Pavarotti, you would not be in doubt about the cursed/called-thing.
Furthermore: If you read Clapton's autobiography, you will learn the meaning of the song.
Lyric Error | Reviewer: rob | 9/10/07
I believe jeff is correct in that the lyric is I've CALLED your name a thousand times' as opposed to CURSED. Several other sites with lyrics to this song all have called and not cursed
Also I think that the lyrics for Pavarotti and Eric C live have been altered intentionally for some reason but altered nonetheless

I also belive that "cursed" is to be CALLED. I´ve just listened to Eric C and Luciano Pavarotti singing Holy Mother together, live recorded, and it sounds that Pavarotti is singing "all I need is a hand to hold" instead of "Holy mother can´t keep control". Does anyone knows if that´s correct?
explanation on "cursed" | Reviewer: jeff | 4/30/07
Not sure the person input the lyric correctly. I believe the line is "I've CALLED your name a thousand times." This fits much better with the rest of the song, and obviously with the very next lines.

Could anyone explain the line in the song which goes as follows
" I've cursed your name a thousand times" ?
Does the word "curse" have another meaning that I couldn't find in the dictionaries?
Thanks in advance.
