John Denver Grandma’s Feather Bed Lyrics

Last updated: 09/30/2012 03:49:02 PM

VERSE 1:
When I was a little bitty boy just up off the floor
We used to go out to Grandma's house every month end or so
Have chicken pie and country ham, homemade butter on the bread
But the best darn thing about Grandma's house was a great big feather bed

CHORUS:
It was nine feet high and six feet wide, soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty 'leven geese, took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick
It'd hold eight kids 'n' four hound dogs and a piggy we stole from the shed
Didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun on Grandma's feather bed

VERSE 2:
After supper we'd sit around the fire, the old folks would spit and chew
Pa would talk about the farm and the war, Granny'd sing a ballad or two
And I'd sit and listen and watch the fire till the cobwebs filled my head
Next thing I’d know I’d wake up in the mornin' in the middle of the old feather bed

VERSE 3:
Well I love my Ma, I love my Pa, I Love Granny and Grandpa too
I’ve Been fishing with my uncle, I’ve wrestled with my cousin, I even kissed Aunt Lou… eww!
But if I ever had to make a choice, I guess it ought to be said…
I'd trade ‘em all plus the gal down the road for Grandma's feather bed
Yes I'd trade ‘em all, plus the gal down the road…

… Well, maybe I’d better reconsider about the gal down the road!

CHORUS:
It was nine feet high and six feet wide, and soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty 'leven geese, took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick
It'd hold eight kids 'n' four hound dogs and a piggy we stole from the shed
Didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun on Grandma's feather bed
Didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun on Grandma's feather bed. yow!

Many Happy Memories for my children | Reviewer: Dads Team | 9/29/12

My late father was a big John Denver fan. I never really appreciated him until after he passed away. John's songs remind me of days gone by both happy and sad with my father. We always play his songs when we go on family trips and Grandma's Feather Bed is always a favorite. We all sing along with great joy. I didn't know John personally, but I have learned about a part of his life through his songs. Playing music for his fans was his life, and my family will always be grateful for this gift. May we see him again in heaven.

I memorized the words to this song a long time ago and love singing it around my house or in the car when no one else is around. I plan on singing it to my grandchildren and teaching them the words. John Denver was certainly a one-of-a-kind individual. I love all his songs, "Cool and Green and Shady" reminds me of when I used to lie on the ground and just watch the clouds change shapes. Simpler times for sure.

Can't help singing | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/9/10

One of my favourites, but then everything that John Denver sang was brilliant. I love nothing better than a car journey with my John Denver CD's to keep me company. Lord knows what fellow drivers think of me driving and singing at the top of my voice LOL. Saddest day ever when he got killed.

Loved this song from the moment I heard it! What kid hasn't bounced up and down on a great big bed? It took me until now to know what he whispered about the gal down the road. John Denver's songs never failed to make you feel better, corny though they might've seemed. He always made you smile, and the world is a less brighter place without his wonderful smile. We miss you, John.

I heard this song many years ago at a bluegrass show, by the writer Jim Connors. It was his first big hit. He was all dressed up in a tux, shiny slippers, and played a Vega banjo. It was quiet a show, that brought back memories. Although I'm not a John Denver fan, I'll have to say he done a good job.

I loved this song as a child and remember bouncing round the living room with my sister when it played, never really knew the lyrics so it was great to fill in the gaps. I really loved hearing it again and will let my children listen to it too, hopefully another generation of John Denver fans to follow.

I grew up with this "bouncy" song as a kid, loving especially the whispered part about the gal down the road. Not until I read the lyrics, though, did I understand all the words to the chorus, which is good since I would not have known what a bolt or tick was when it came to making a feather bed. As an adult the song represents more than just a childhood memory, however. John Denver's music became immortalized in my mind and heart the day he died in that plane crash. Ever since then, the songs he sang - always with a smile, doing what he loved to do most - became songs that stood for the best in love, and romance, family and friendship. He shared his life with us, his fans for a very brief time, but left behind a legacy that most men never achive in two lifetimes. I won't be surpised, if when we get to heaven, we will see John Denver playing music while sitting in the middle of a great big feather bed.

Oh such a lovely bouncy song about childhood in the American South back in the day! lol Got this in my John Denver boxset and it's a lot of fun esp. the part about 8 kids, 4 dogs & the piggy they stole from the shed! Gotta love that piggy... : D Great song that should be listened to over and over again. : )

Whats the whisper? | Reviewer: Owen | 11/17/07

Very good, but you missed the bit where he whisperes something after saying 'I'd trade 'em all plus the gal down the road...' for the second time. What does he whisper?
