Drunkship Of Lanterns Lyrics - Mars Volta

Review The Song (7)

You've got the lot to burn
A shelve of pig smotherd cries
Is there a spirit that spits
Upon the exit of signs
Is anybody there
(spines in a row)
These steps keep on growing long
(spite as an arrow)
Bayonet trials rust propellers await
No
Nobody is heard
Rowing sheep smiles for the dead
Nobody is heard
An antiquated home
Afloat with engines on mute
Sui generis ship spined around the yard
Is anybody there
(spines in a row)
These craft only multiply
(spine as an arrow)
At the nape of ruins rust propellers await
No
Nobody is heard compass wilting in the wind
Nobody is heard
Rowing sheep smile for the dead
Transoceanic depth in this earth
In this cenotaph
Lash of one thousand eye brows clicking
Counting the toll
Counting the toll
You've got the lot to burn
A shelve of pig smothered cries
Is there a spirit that spits upon the exit of signs
Is anybody there
(spines in a row)
These steps keep on growing long
(spine as an arrow)
Bayonet trials rust propellers await
No
Nobody is heard compass wilting in the wind
Nobody is heard rowing sheep smile for the dead
Transoceanic depth in this earth in this cenotaph
Carpel jets
hit the ground
Carpel jets
hit the ground
Carpel jets
hit the ground
Carpel jets
hit the ground
Lash of one thousand eyebrows clicking
Counting the toll
Counting the toll
Lash of one thousand eyebrows clicking
Counting the toll
Counting the toll

War | Reviewer: James | 5/16/11

Best Anti-War song since "When the Tigers Broke Free." Remember the Compass Rose is the symbol for the CIA, which has a habit of interfering with South and Middle American Countries, which may be why he chose it. Regardless, he seems to be talking about war machines and the people who run them and how many people are killed simply as a result of the machines existing.

Not quite meaningless | Reviewer: Anonymous | 9/15/10

This album is about someone (Cerpin Taxt) who ODs on heroin and enters a coma (as seen in Son et Lumiere and Inertiatic ESP). Most of the rest of the album is about the unconscious journey he goes through while in the coma.

This song in particular he wakes up (but still in a coma) in the middle of a sea surrounded by rusted submarines, a heavy storm starts and he retreats into one of the submarines which he gets stuck in and starts to go insane.

"Lash of one thousand eyebrows clicking
Counting the toll
Counting the toll"

As in the only thing he can do is watch his eyelids blinking.

There's a website with a song by song interpretation. Makes the album a LOT better when you know what it's about. Of course the listener is free to create their own personal meanings to the lyrics too.

Meaningless | Reviewer: Jimmy | 3/24/10

Omar and Cedric have said in interviews that the lyrics are applied to the music, not the other way around, and that they come spontaneously from listening to the rhythms in the music. They have no intended meaning. This does not mean that they are meaningless - in fact the point they might be trying to make is that it is the listener who invests meaning in the song, not the creator. Critically, these are Edward Lear-style nonsense-lyrics (and bad English!), but the listener can still draw something personal from them.

so awesome. | Reviewer: Anonymous | 4/8/09

I will never profess to understand everything about this band, I won't even begin to start trying. All I know, is every track on this album is a chord on heartstrings. Just the slightest amount of research into the depth of feeling encompassed by this album.. leads you into a vortex of discovery and unimaginable insight. And for those who don't realize it at first..
YES the lyrics DO have meaning. Just read them for yourself!

Mars Volta is by far the new era of rock. The music is arranged so well and played with such muscianship that its like art. Mars Volta is a masterpiece band with masterpiece sound, done deal. Amazing stuff!!

in one interview Cedric mentioned that Drunkship Of Lanterns is his favorite in this album. I'll agree with him that it's very good.

The Mars Volta are amazing. | Reviewer: ricci | 2/12/07

I love this song, the percussion in this song, like any other song they've created, is outstanding. Needless to say, all the instrumentals are insane, mars volta is soo sick!
