Donna Donna Lyrics - Joan Baez

Review The Song (27)

On a waggon bound for market
there`s a calf with a mournful eye.
High above him there`s a swallow,
winging swiftly through the sky.
How the winds are laughing,
they laugh with all their might.
Laugh and laugh the whole day through,
and half the summer`s night.
Donna, Donna, Donna, Donna; Donna, Donna, Donna, Don.
Donna, Donna, Donna, Donna; Donna, Donna, Donna, Don.
"Stop complaining!“ said the farmer,
Who told you a calf to be ?
Why don`t you have wings to fly with,
like the swallow so proud and free?“ + Chorus
Calves are easily bound and slaughtered,
never knowing the reason why.

But who ever treasures freedom,
like the swallow has learned to fly. + Chorus

I love this Song. | Reviewer: Rebecca Gutierrez | 4/24/14

I remember learning this song in the 6th grade (I think it was). It has never left my memory. I've been singing it for years although I didn't remember all the lyrics. Brings nice memories. I love to sing!

Donna Donna | Reviewer: Tomas | 3/19/14

This was a popular folk song in New Mexico in 1965. I performed it with my friend Kitty at various venues around Albuquerque many times. We were in high school at the time and performed it at some school functions also. Over 40 years later, we were playing Words With Friends and the word dona came up. We were both immediately reminded of the song. I hadn't thought about it for many years, but it brought back warm memories for both of us.

I learn to play the guitar because of this song | Reviewer: Ramlah Sulaiman | 2/28/14

My memory while listening to this song took me to Sekolah Tun Fatimah Johor Bahru Malaysia in early 70s. I was 17 then. A pretty Malay girl (Maria Samad I think)sang while playing a guitar. Today, over 40 years later, I am learning to play the guitar(I am a pensioner aged 62)and my first song learning the chords (Am, Em, F and Dm) is Donna, donna, Donna). Oh how I love to play and sing this beautiful but sad song. I'm not good yet and the tune was 'off' but I will perfect it (give myself half a year, it doesn't matter). Thank you so much for putting it here...

Learn to fly! | Reviewer: Ashutosh | 8/10/13

To me this is a spiritual songtext. It means that we have a choice: either to "learn to fly" (that is, to look for our true self, reality, immortality) or - after a life of waste and emptiness - to sadly die "never knowing the reason why". After all: "who told you a calf to be?" We are all here to LEARN something, right? So this song is not really sad or pathetic. It tells us to be like swallows...

The brief meaning | Reviewer: Ecrumauve | 1/28/12

This song has a deep meaning actually. It was created by duo Jews in time of Nazi's government. It depicts how the Jews suffered from it. The word "Donna" itself can be translated differently. It can be "God" from "Adonijah" or a cow "Donna".

Memories | Reviewer: Lucy | 12/22/11

about 3 years ago when i was in 6th grade we sung this song in Chorus... over time i had forgotten the lyrics but not the tune... some of the lyrics (first verse) i remembered and looked up today! such a great song! and very catchy tune!

Donna donna is the saddest song ever written | Reviewer: Kees Koppers | 10/8/11

The English version is closest to the original, wehich is written in Jiddish, the language of the Jews in Europe. Jtschak Katsenelson composed the song after his wife and two sons (11 and 14) were murdered in Auschwitz. Katsenelson was killed there too in April 1944.

The French version Dona Dona is better | Reviewer: DIen | 7/25/11

The French version is nicer, it's about a young boy felt in love and left house for an adventure. Funny, how they translated into English about a cow in slaughter's house. There is no poetic in this at all.
