The Mark Twain straight talking country style lyrics are great and so much to the point there need be no explanation to understand what this one means. Therefore, the emphasis of this review will be to compliment the song writer for the way the words and the music flow, and to acknowledge what affect it may have on some of the listeners. The verse "When your rooster crows at the break of dawn...Look out your window and I'll be gone, You're the reason I'm traveling on", I liked to sing when I needed something to help give me strength to get out of a relationship that seemed to be going no where. Fight or flight, is an old saying. Back then, the grass looked greener on the other side. Nevertheless, I found out in life, that most of the time it's better to stand, and fight instead of running away. Being a Christian, the best weapons to use are the weapons of our warfare that are not carnal,but mighty to the pulling down of strongholds, taking up the whole armour of God as spoken of in Ephesians Chapter 6. True love never runs smooth. Life is full of troubles. In this world we shall have tribulation, Jesus said. But be of good cheer, because I have overcome so shall you. In another verse, it is said "I'm on the dark side of the road". Maybe his heart that he says he gave her, is telling him, he shouldn't go. Then, in the next line he says,"I wish there was somethin' you would do or say, to try to make me change my mind and stay". He doesn't really want to go. He wants her to stop acting like a child is hinted in
the verse "I once loved a woman, a child I'm told. I gave her my heart, but she wanted my soul". apparently she needs to stop being so self-centered and say or do something to help him to feel loved, again. He's hurt. It's possible that she didn't mean to hurt him. Maybe the timing wasn't right, or maybe she didn't believe he really loved her.
What did he do to show his love for her to help her to trust and believe in him. It's not mentioned except I gave her my heart and time. Maybe she gave him her heart and time, too. Now, what are they a gonna do if she means it, too. "I love you, Don't think twice, it's all right", and kiss each other goodnight, would be a happy ending for this song.
