Devils & Dust Lyrics - Bruce Springsteen

Review The Song (6)

I got my finger on the trigger
But I don't know who to trust
When I look into your eyes
There's just devils and dust
We're a long, long way from home, Bobbie
Home's a long, long way from us
I feel a dirty wind blowing
Devils and dust

I got God on my side
And I'm just trying to survive
What if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love
Fear's a powerful thing, baby
It can turn your heart black you can trust
It'll take your God filled soul
And fill it with devils and dust

Well I dreamed of you last night
In a field of blood and stone
The blood began to dry
The smell began to rise
Well I dreamed of you last night, Bobbie
In a field of mud and bone
Your blood began to dry
And the smell began to rise

We've got God on our side
We're just trying to survive
What if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love
Fear's a powerful thing, baby
It'll turn your heart black you can trust
It'll take your God filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust
It'll take your God filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust

[Harmonica solo]

Now every woman and every man
They wanna take a righteous stand
Find the love that God wills
And the faith that He commands
I've got my finger on the trigger
And tonight faith just ain't enough
When I look inside my heart
There's just devils and dust

Well I've got God on my side
And I'm just trying to survive
What if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love
Fear's a dangerous thing
It can turn your heart black you can trust
It'll take your God filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust
Yeah it'll take your God filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust

[Harmonica solo]

So, it's been a while since this video was posted initially but I just had to comment on what Geoffrey said. I am assuming Mr. Douglas that you have been to Iraq because that is the only reason I can see for you having an opinion on the matter at all. If you have been there, thank you for your service and you are entitled to your opinion whether it is intelligent or not. However, if you have not been there, you have absolutely NO right to even talk about the "Dumb American Kids" that VOLUNTEERED to protect your ungrateful butt. Be VERY, VERY cautious when taking a stand and talking about things that you couldn't possibly understand. "Itchy trigger fingers"? Really? Dude, I have been there. I am a psychologist for the Army. If anyone understands that aspect it is me. The whole point of the song is the conflict between what his Commander in Chief is asking him to do, and what his "fellow" Americans back home are telling him he SHOULD do. How do you think that makes a young, impressionable kid feel? Thanks for the support, man.

From RollingStone.com:

The inspiration for reviving the solo material, Springsteen says, was a new song, "Devils and Dust," that he wrote in 2003 at the start of the Iraq War. ("I've got my finger on the trigger/But I don't know who to trust," it begins.) "It is basically a song about a soldier's point of view in Iraq," Springsteen says. "But it kind of opens up to a lot of other interpretations."

Springsteen tried recording the title track as both an angry rock song and an acoustic ballad

...Springsteen launched the program with "Devils and Dust," the title track to his new disc, which is to be released Apr 26. He said the song was written when U.S. troops entered Iraq, and deals with the struggle between the personal and the political. "What if we do destroy our ideals?" he asked.

Glad there are some decent Americans out there like Springsteen...

Although i believe in the occupation of iraq..... | Reviewer: SierraHotel | 8/24/08

the song highlights the best and worst of human nature. No matter how scared, and how malicious we get, we can always fall back on our faith. By the way, Geoffrey Douglas, if the "Devils and Dust" shoot at us........WE SHOOT BACK!!! you don't screw with America. it just doesn't work out.

Dear PJ

Could you really not glean the basic meaning of this song? Dumb American kids in the deserts of Iraq, who can no longer see your god, and now have itchy trigger fingers for the "devils and dust" they have been taught to be fearful of.

It's a perfect parenthesis to 'Born in the USA'. A lot of these dumb kids are going to appreciate the verses of that song in ten years time, even if they were lost on you my friend...

Have mercy on us all.

don't know who to trust | Reviewer: PJ | 1/22/08

Starting with such nervousness, tenacity, and distrust... this song flows from the torments of believing and seeing the decay all around you, and to him, the decay of society is nowhere near as disturbing as the decay within the hearts of man, the belief of man, and the hopes of heaven. The dreams in the middle verse, it is interesting how he mixes mud and stone with blood and bone, intonating we are the earth, a common belief, but eloquently done. He then speaks of the addictions that have gripped us, and our "rightous stand" where we come come together to rise up and take back what is ours, to stand up and demand this be fixed, justice be levied, and the future for those who will come next be ensured.
