It perfectly describes the last book of a trilogy I am writing at the moment; the main character's best friend possesses an ethereal energy which is the only hope of ending a war and holding the city against a demonic army, but to release it he must die. I think of the first verse as from his point of view, and the rest of it from the main character's point of view, as she is begging him not to sacrifice himself. "Dark Wings" is unbelievably amazing. I love the stanza: "Don't you die on me/You haven't made your peace/Live life, breathe, breath!" You really feal enchanted at first but the middle part of the song is really i dont know what to say for it. I think they tried to make a crechendo but didnt work out.
