Captain Jack Lyrics - Billy Joel

Review The Song (7)

Captain Jack - Billy Joel

Saturday night, and you're still hangin' around.
Tired of living in your one-horse town.
You'd like to find a little hole in the ground,
For awhile.
So you go to the Village in your tie-dyed jeans.
And you stare at the junkies and the closet queens.
It's like some pornographic magazine,
And you smile.

But Captain Jack will get you high tonight,
And take you to your special island.
Captain Jack will get you by tonight.
Just a little push, and you'll be smilin'.

Your sister's gone out,she on a date.
You just sit at home and masturbate.
Your phone is gonna ring soon, but you just can't wait
sponsored links
For that call.
So you stand on the corner in your New English clothes.
And you look so polished, from your hair down to your toes.
Ah but still, your finger's gonna pick your nose
After all.

But Captain Jack will get you high tonight,
And take you to your special island.
Captain Jack will get you by tonight.
Just a little push, and you'll be smilin'.

So you decide to take a, holiday.
You got your tape deck and your brand new Chevrolet.
Ah, there ain't no place to go anyway.
What for?
So you got everything, aww, but nothing's cool.
They just found your father in the swimming pool.
And you guess you won't be going back to school
Anymore.

But Captain Jack will get you high tonight,
And take you to your special island.
Ohh Captain Jack will get you by tonight.
Just a little push, and you'll be smilin'.

So you play your albums, and you smoke your pot.
And you meet your girlfriend in the parking lot.
Ohh, but still you're aching for the things you haven't got.
What went wrong?
And if you can't understand why your world is so dead,
Why you've got to keep in style, and feed your head.
Well you're 21 and still your mother makes your bed,
And that's too long.

But Captain Jack will get you high tonight.
And take you to your special island.
Well now Captain Jack will get you by tonight.
Just a little push, and you'll be smilin'.
Ohh, Captain Jack will get you high tonight.
And take you to your special island.
Well now, Captain Jack could make you die tonight.
Just a little push, and you'll be smilin'.

This is a hideous song | Reviewer: Joe | 2/7/14

I heard this thing again last night on the radio and was shocked by how awful it is. Masturbation and picking your nose? There's a poetic image you can't get out of your head. Then there are those tie dyed jeans. There is no such thing as tie dyed jeans. T-shirts, yes. But T-shirts doesn't rhyme with queens. And if in one verse you're wearing unreal hippie clothes, how can you be so stylish in the next? And from your head to your toes, no less.

An absolute mess of a song.

Sorry ray no such luck not about deities or Jewish dogma. It is about a drug dealer nicknamed Capt jack that Billy Joel knew growing up. He is making social commentary on semi-affluent middle class youth that get caught up in drugs out of boredom of suburbia. It is an anti drug song. Not a song about religion and islands from movies. The island he refers to is long island. Nice try though buddy.

First off, this is not about one guy, it's several examples of several situations. Captain Jack isn't about Jack Daniels, it's about exactly what is written, Captain Jack. Where have you heard that before, recently? Captain Jack is a sinfull diety, a demon, that some people worship. Notice the reference to the Island? Also in the movies, the Jack is stranded on an Island several times. This is all about Jewish dogma, not one guy that gets drunk all the time. Quit suffering from surface level ignorance, you're getting played while they laugh in your face.

The character in the song is such a tool. He wants to be cool but he's still a tool. I love it. Billy manages to sum this guy up in a serious way, yet still make fun of him. Amazing song writing. I remember my mother playing this record when it came out in '73, and wondering why the man in the song still picked his nose - even as a grown up.

He's 21 and his mother still makes his bed. Enough said.

"Captain Jack" a classic | Reviewer: A. Black | 9/1/09

Billy Joel is clearly one of the best songwriters of his generation. He also, in my opinion, has a great voice and great skill on the keyboard.
I am sure that some who read this will think this is a bizarre analogy, but I think his style of singing is a cross between Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. He posesses a signature sound, that is recognized immediately. B.J. has the ability to make you feel what he is trying to convey through his lyrics. A combination of cool words and melodies like Sinatra, and at times the hard, grinding rock and roll vocals like Elvis.

In my opinion this song really speaks to me; It shows how the character in the song obviously has a lot of money cause he can aford heroin and cockaine and fancy clothes but the thing that he lacks in his life is exitement and thrill; it seems as if life has become one long ballad of saddness and self-pity. The line "Your sister's gone out, she's on a date and you just sit at home and masterbate" shows how the character doesn't really care that his sis is having fun and he would rather do that the see her off or ask how it went. He just doesn't get any joy out of the world anymore.

Great lyrics | Reviewer: Chris King | 1/29/08

Great lyrics for a serious topic. He is unquestionably a great lyricist and the melody seems perfect. Now I know there aren't Billy Joel fans out there but he really proved himself I feel. His success is no accident.
He does not rings everybody's bell but let's look at some of the great lyrics: So you decide to take a, holiday.

The last few lines are haunting and piercing and he has that capacity.

It reminds me of the skill of "she's only a woman" which has heartache written all over it and even "piano man" and even the upbeat "sometimes a fantasy"-- he fuses an upbeat feeling and a sad feeling simultaneously.
He created irony and substance where maybe that is lacking today a bit.
You always understand his lyrics-- you can actually decipher them-- and he always tells a story. I remembered when my friend died tragically on his motorcycle at 25 and I get chills telling this story but when his friends sang his favorite song and the lyrics from that song "bottle of white and bottle of red" it brings tears to my eyes running down my face as I write this. I can't say that was one of my favorites but at that moment, nothing seem more right and they sang with gusto and cheer at a bar in Forest Hills and well, the tears keep coming. Listen, in fourth grade Glass Houses was my album of choice and it still holds up. He is a gifted man and I have no problem with his massive success and riches. Sometimes I guess it's more cool for me to say I love David Bowie or The Stones and U2 and Dylan and I do, but let's give a hand to Billy for making some songs that clearly stand the test of time and even songs later like "Matter of Trust"-- that's obviously a man capable of great lyrics and melody.
Can we please get more of that today!
