Bottom Lyrics - Tool

Review The Song (16)

Compassion is broken now,
my will is eroded now,
desire it is broken now,
and it makes me feel ugly.
I'm on my knees and burnin'
my piss and moans are the fuel that sets my head on fire
so smell my soul is burnin'
I'm broken, lookin' up I see the enemy
and i have swallowed the poisons you feed me,
but I've survived on the poison you feed me,
leavin' me guilt fed, hatred fed, weakness fed,
it makes me feel ugly
on my knees and burnin'
my piss and moans are the fuel that sets my head on fire
I'm dead inside

shit adds up, shit adds up, shit adds up, shit adds up at the bottom

If I let you, you would make me destroy myself.
in order to survive you, i must first survive myself.
I can sink no further, and I cannot forgive you
there's no choice but to confront you, to engage you, to erase you.
I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshold of pain
I will use my mistakes against you, there's no other choice
im shameless now, im nameless now, im nothing now, im no one now
but my soul must be iron 'cause my fear is naked
im naked and fearless
and my fear is naked

dead inside, dead inside, dead inside
nameless now, shameless now, nothing now, no one now
shit adds up (x4)
and you see me naked now
fearless now, naked now (x2)
shit adds up
it leaves me dead inside (x4)

hatred keeps me alive
Lonliness keeps me alive
weakness keeps me alive
guilt keeps me alive
at the bottom

Ego | Reviewer: Laura | 8/13/14

I like to think this song pertains to a man battling his ego. I know Tool really put an emphasize on the ego in the Lateralus album, but perhaps this song as well. Maybe it is just me interpreting it this way because I too am trying to destroy my ego, which is no easy task. If I let you, you would make me destroy myself.
"in order to survive you, i must first survive myself.
I can sink no further, and I cannot forgive you
there's no choice but to confront you, to engage you, to erase you.
I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshold of pain
I will use my mistakes against you, there's no other choice
im shameless now, im nameless now, im nothing now, im no one now
but my soul must be iron 'cause my fear is naked
im naked and fearless
and my fear is naked"

Something more "in the middle" of all of these interpretations | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/24/14

Most of Tool's songs have a relatively abstract philosophic or spiritual meaning. I don't think that they are completely abstract and open up to whatever interpretation. I think Maynard feels something more particular when writing. What defines his writing is his tendency of speaking about personal development and inner fights or even "inner relationships".
That being said, if I tried to extract a relatively abstract meaning out of this I'd say that it is about addiction or depression or any similar kind of situation. It's pretty clear to me that it expresses such feelings. He was either recalling multiple situations that create such feelings or a certain situation that it is related to many others anyway.

Toxic Relationships | Reviewer: Toololgy | 11/23/13

I think it's about a toxic relationship cuz I can relate to every lyric when it comes down to me and my ex. I put up with so much shit but it all added up to give me the strength to end a 17 year relationship. I felt worthless at the bottom. But "shit adds up at the bottom" If I let her, she would make me destroy myself. I had to engage her, erase her, I had no other choice because I was at the bottom. I was naked and fearless, nothing to hide anymore and I didn't care what people found out cuz I was at the bottom. And "shit adds up at the bottom!!!"

Pyramid | Reviewer: Random | 10/3/13

This song is about being at the bottom of society's pyramid. The common person is fed propoganda and lies. The main institutions ie Religion and Government are using divide and conquer tactics to control "peasants". By understanding this, you further alienate yourself from your drone counterparts. The individual is turning these negative realizations into a drive to rebel against the system. Tool is known for philosophical music, not everyday BS.

Gay Perspective | Reviewer: Merv | 5/9/13

My homosexual friend thought it was about being a bottom? As in the guy who takes it up the pooper in a gay relationship.... and also the feelings associated with that when you are conflicted about it and overcoming them... I like the tree thing more...

Whuuut ? | Reviewer: Jeremy | 1/22/13

Allright guys, why is it always complete clarity what you desire to see behind tool's lyrics. The magical thing about them is basically (at least for me) that they're omnivalent. It's your choice how you set them in context with your own expiriences and feelings.
Stop to try divide right in two but expand your limits. Expierencing yourself through a tool-songtext, through tool itself. That's why this band is that outstanding to me.
Over & out

No Meaning | Reviewer: Victor | 12/8/12

Metaphors,

I think tools lyrics are precise for some of their songs with meaning, others I think are Maynards unique creativity at work, I think his lyrics take on multiple meanings and feelings as he writes.
A combination of emotion, memories, thoughts.
Its art at its best, enjoy them, they can mean what you want the mean, thats the gift.

Inverted Tree of Death | Reviewer: Brahmin | 11/16/12

It's actually about the inverted cosmic tree of death and how from the perspective of the inverted tree, one is at the bottom in the terrestrial paradise. See AK Coomaraswamy on the Inverted Tree of Brahman for explanation.

It's not about addiction. It's about being an outcast. My soul must be iron 'cause my fear is naked. That's exactly how I dealt with my teenaged years. I've only just heard this song and it definitely dredged up some old shit.

Goddamn, I thought I worked through all that shit years ago and now it feels fresh. Great song.

also certainly.. | Reviewer: Greasy (the money maker) | 8/18/12

It is about a guy who works for the garbage collection dept and he is annoyed about everyone throwing stuff away, most likely used diapers.

He is also coming to terms with seing old ladies looking out the window at him and looking down on him, as well as hicks and your general, filth and scum.

He rants about having to eat what others throw away and that the day he finds an eraser will be the day he will knock on someones door and attack them with a perfectly good eraser that they too, have thrown away.

He also hints that he wants more green vegetables to be thrown out, which puts a whole paradoxical situation into the song showing he is confused..

Basically, the song means something to the singer and unless you know him and talk to him, you'll never know.

Look at some of the longer reviews in pet by apc that aren't about drug addiction then look these lyrics over again, yes this song may be about addiction but that's the funny thing about maynards work, there isn't usually one set meaning, its a matter of your perspective on the song, no one person besides the tool members can say for sure what the song is about, many of us see the more blatantly obvious meaning such as that, and few of us see the hidden higher message in these songs, like I said read the not drug addiction related reviews and then look over specifically the part about the poisons, weakness, making him feel "ugly" bringing us down, see people who come right out with who is doing this this tend to have "unfortunate events" happen to them so they are forced to have them hidden behind other meanings, the go back to sleep, thing is "them" keeping us blind from what's really going on, all we really, need is "peace love and understAnding

Or you can back to sleep counting bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums, and being date and ignorant from the "poisons and devils" that is the real, truth that everyone should know. Just remember, do not follow false profits.and gods if your going to wake up.. --D--

Drugs, Alchohol, Gambling - Take your pick | Reviewer: KH | 7/5/11

I believe this is a song about confronting addiction.
The addiction itself....
and i have swallowed the poisons you feed me,
but I've survived on the poison you feed me,

And like all addictions the emptiness that follows the 'hit'
leavin' me guilt fed, hatred fed, weakness fed,
it makes me feel ugly

and I'm dead inside

I suspect this talks directly to the addiction.

If I let you, you would make me destroy myself.
in order to survive you, i must first survive myself.
I can sink no further, and I cannot forgive you
there's no choice but to confront you, to engage you, to erase you.

And then the realization of what he/she has done in order to deny to themselves their addiction and how these mistakes must be used as a weapon to defeat the addiction......
I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshold of pain
I will use my mistakes against you, there's no other choice

The bottom of the barrel, rock bottom describe the song title.

Nakedness is exposing yourself to the world - the first step in fighting addiction is publicly admitting you have a problem and in essence being naked in front of everyone you know.

And BT - I'm with you, I still goose pimple up every time I hear Maynard scream Dead Insiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide! One of my all time favourite Tool songs.

Todos | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/17/11

Im guessing that this song is dealing with depression. Shit adds up at the bottom is referring to events in daily life that make the person in the song sad or angry. During the song when the guy starts talking about "confronting" you, he's talking about dealing with his anger or depression. Then becoming "shameless" now is that he has overcome his depression.

At the top of their game at " the bottom" | Reviewer: BT | 2/4/11

I remeber the first time I heard this song (album). I was playing, headlining, with my band at a Halloween show and this record had just come out. We had all taken mushrooms about an hour before d their sets and the sound guy put on Undertow on. I had already heard Sober on the radio alot, then Bottom came on and set my brain on fire. That song fueled the psychoactives pumped through my cerebral pathways and brought on such visions as if I was riding the whole stage through rushing rapids. I didnt even want to perform, I just wanted to listen to the rest of the album. I remember while playing all I could do was replay Mayanard screaming, I'm Dead insiiiiiiiiiide, which then triggers the complete time break down, shit adds up. I was blown away. I'll never forget that nite. When I subsequently bought the album, it lived my car stereo for a whole year!!! I saw them play twice at small clubs that winter. So awesome live!!
