Black mirrors are television or video screens (computer, smartphone, etc) According to Win Butler, any references to the ocean on this LP represent chaos/disorder/confusion. I believe he's stated that he thinks your world view is subliminally influenced by the media displayed in black mirrors. Television, religion, the ocean (disorder) are major themes on "Neon Bible".

I love this exquisite song! Unless I'm spinning the vinyl version, I end repeating it a few times in a row. I work as a location sound recordist for television and video, theatrical documentary, etc, so this song has become a beautiful sick theme song for me and my conflicting feelings of helping feed "Black Mirrors" (though I admit I love my job).

It took some time to really touch my nerves, this song. I think it's so excellent. It sounds like threat, nervousness, panic. It sounds so urgent.
The text is mysterious to me.
First the image of the ocean with no light reflecting on it: black mirror. It's derp and dark and wide. It's threatening.
Then the security camera image of a person, but you can't really see anything, can't look him in tne eye. It's pseudo security, no contact.
3rd couplet: i think it's about when there will be fights instead of talking, words have no meaning anymore, they're empty, cause many are being self-centered. No contact between people.

Great song.... The black mirror is the television .... Flat panel black mirror that hangs on the wall.... Doesn't show you your reflection.... Tells you where the bombs wil fall.... Never hear their names is talking about the people behind mass propaganda/major networks... It's talking about how they're ruining our world...

great song, i'm guessing this songs about the apocalypse or something, obviously thats what is being said in the end. But my interpretation of the whole black mirror thing is that its like the darkness is a mystery, like looking at yourself in a black mirror and you still get this mysterious feeling but you see nothing. Like the mysteries of life, death and what not are the black mirror and all we are are these words within us which will only lose meaning in the long run cause in the end all that there truly is is that deep, dark mystery... the black mirror.

This track is very unique. All its own. I have recently Stumbled upon The Arcade Fire in the past week and i have fallen in love. Trust me you wont be disappointed. Try out "Tunnels" also.
