Don't wanna be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new media.
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mind fuck America.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Where Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.
Well maybe I'm the fagot America.
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along in the age of paranoia.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well then that's enough to argue.
Don't wanna be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information nation of hysteria.
It's going out to idiot America.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.

Review about American Idiot I love the song. Selling out? Please. | Reviewer: Charli | 10/26/09
whether or not "fuck america" music was popular in the early 2000's this song still signifies more. yea, maybe it was their intention to get caught up on the "fuck america" bandwagon but its not selling out. sit back and think about all the ridiculous things that we as americans do because of the media. The media has us like puppets on strings. nobody misses out on that. tell me you dont do a single thing because of the media and i will tell you that you are a lier and prove it. so many things have happened in this country because of the media. Media and violence is a major problem in our country and we allow it to be. If someone wants to write a song about it, all the power to them. maybe if more people would let go of their pride and take a good look around they might realize that infact this song might have been made to latch onto the "fuck america" bandwagon, but what it ends up representing is so much more. this is one of the best songs ever made. i am american through and through. yea this song is a bash at us and yea greenday wouldn't be famous without the media. that in itself makes it even better. it must mean alot to someone who is willing to bite the hand that feeds them in order to get a point across. i'm sick of all the shit being said about this song. it's a great song. The presidents are another story themselves, i'm not a fan of either bush or obama, but neither of them sit there and tell you to turn on your tv and radio. neither of them make you listen. everybody is responsible for their own actions. own up. Best song ever Greenday.
well..... | Reviewer: nobody | 9/5/09
hmm... i dunno... i've read about 3 pages of the review and got confused instead. the first time I hear the song I think that song means that they said to you Americans, not to be an idiot. Why must americans? Of course you all asked that. But I think that' probably because they came from America continents, right? If they were from Asian, maybe it's name is not 'American Idiot' anymore. Instead it's 'Asian Idiot'. ^^; So that doesn't mean they said clearly 'Americans are idiot!' Nah, I think it's more of 'some idiots from America'. But we all know idiots not just come from America, right? That's a few things about what : want to say. Sorry for my bad English anyway. I'm just 13, and what's more, my mother tongue is not English.
Not Punk? Fuck America Bandwagon? Sell Outs, Huh? | Reviewer: Meloria | 7/20/09
Man, some of you people are a trip. I've been listening to punk since '78, and though Green Day is more polished, they are not sellouts. Don't forget many bands recorded their own stuff, because they couldn't get signed. Not that they didn't want to be, no labels would not. Bands became frustrated by this and it came through in the music.
While it's true most of their music is soft by comparison to a lot of stuff out there, it's still punk. American Idiot embodies the "punk" philosophy. Politics and anti-corporate sentiment inspired punk rock.
And, to the person who says there was a Fuck America mainstream bandwagon when this song came out, you are totally full of shit. It took eight excruciating years before I heard the collective pop of the mainstream pulling their heads out of their asses, and began questioning our government, again. In the early 2000s, we were deemed terrorist sympathizers and told to leave if we didn't like what was going on, or if we questioned the Bush Administration.
An european answer to reviewer Joe | Reviewer: Anonymous | 6/29/09
Can't believe my eyes what Joe wrote in his review: for him it's okay to learn history from movies and he believes USA join WWII to help Europe. What about Pearl Harbour and the nazis plans to invade USA after Europe was occupied ??!!.... "The USA has been good to its foreign neighbors"- hey Joe are you an employee of the Ministry of foreign affairs??!!
This song is about this kind of people, not about all the americans . All nations have their own rednecks like Joe. About them is this funny song.
Folks. The term "selling out" is highly arbitrary here. People forming a band are also citizens of America, they didn't fall off of the moon. If a period of hatred towards the government started in the society, than you must accept the fact that artist will get touched with it too, and thus may want to speak out. It's not as if there is a trend to write political songs - how many bands have their songs themed with that even? Relax and simply listen... Or go swimming or toss the cabbage or whatever.
And as a comment to the gay who said that there was a "Fuck America" trend in the 2000s... WELCOME BACK FROM THE ICE AGE! The "trend" is still here! And it's getting worse. Better do something about that, America. Your dream is becoming more dreamy...
...and I beg to dream and differ...

great | Reviewer: lissa | 6/18/09
Thi song is great. I love. Sure, it's not as good as their glory days (dookie and warning) but it's still pretty awesome.
I hate that just because they made a statement about goverment at a time when everyone was starting to hate the goverment, they've become "sell outs."
and as for "This is selling-out at it's worse." I think Kiss is doing much worse right now. Releasing their new album as a wal mart exclusive? Especially after wal-mart just refused to sell Green Day's new album becuase Green Day wouldn't censor it, it the worst thing they could do, next to becoming rappers,
btw, green day rocks even more for refusing to censor their album!
Like the song, waiting for the next one | Reviewer: scott | 6/8/09
The song is pretty legit. If the band didn't like where the nation was heading to before with Bush, I am hoping that they are not brainwashed like the rest of the media and can write an equally critical song of how horrible of a job that the Obama administration is doing. I'm excited to see if the band is unbiased and can see corruption regardless of what extreme party stance it comes from, or if they much like the rest of the entertainment industry and only pushing one message.
if you dont like greendays songs dont bother posting comments or looking at word just let all the fans (Like myself .. big fan!!)enjoy their music because i think it awsome i lovvee trecool ,i lovvee billie joe and i lovvee mike!!!
Great song!!! | Reviewer: Bob | 5/10/09
I'm glad artist came out with music like this. Eminem did it with "mosh" and Green Day with this song. Nobody liked the what this country was turning into because of George Bush. I'm glad he is gone. Great song, i loved it.
Some people think this song sucks! But me and my family love it! It may not be punk, but that doesn't mean you should dislike it. I'm American and don't think that people should go around dissing people because of this song, but it it sounds cool, and it is funny, so I think Green Day is an awesome band, and it always will be to me.
