Ænema Lyrics - Tool

Review The Song (19)

Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will.
I sure could use a vacation from this

Bullshit three ring circus sideshow of
Freaks

Here in this hopeless fucking hole we call LA
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away.
Any fucking time. Any fucking day.
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay.

Fret for your figure and
Fret for your latte and
Fret for your lawsuit and
Fret for your hairpiece and
Fret for your prozac and
Fret for your pilot and
sponsored links
Fret for your contract and
Fret for your car.

It's a
Bullshit three ring circus sideshow of
Freaks

Here in this hopeless fucking hole we call LA
The only way to fix it is to flush it all away.
Any fucking time. Any fucking day.
Learn to swim, I'll see you down in Arizona bay.

Some say a comet will fall from the sky.
Followed by meteor showers and tidal waves.
Followed by faultlines that cannot sit still.
Followed by millions of dumbfounded dipshits.

Some say the end is near.
Some say we'll see armageddon soon.
I certainly hope we will cuz
I sure could use a vacation from this

Stupid shit, Silly shit, stupid shit...

One great big festering neon distraction,
I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied.

Learn to swim.

Mom's gonna fix it all soon.
Mom's comin' round to put it back the way it ought to be.

Learn to swim.

Fuck L Ron Hubbard and
Fuck all his clones.
Fuck all these gun-toting
Hip gangster wannabes.

Learn to swim.

Fuck retro anything.
Fuck your tattoos.
Fuck all you junkies and
Fuck your short memory.

Learn to swim.

Fuck smiley glad-hands
With hidden agendas.
Fuck these dysfunctional,
Insecure actresses.

Learn to swim.

Cuz I'm praying for rain
And I'm praying for tidal waves
I wanna see the ground give way.
I wanna watch it all go down.
Mom please flush it all away.
I wanna see it go right down.
I wanna watch it go right in.
Watch you flush it all away.

Time to bring it down again.
Don't just call me pessimist.
Try and read between the lines.

I can't imagine why you wouldn't
Welcome any change, my friend.

I wanna see it all come down.
put it down.
suck it down.
flush it down.

It's about bill hicks | Reviewer: Ben | 4/20/13

I appreciate the extra meaning everyone is finding in the lyrics "learn to swim", but this is literally a tribute to Bill Hicks and his beliefs. Listen to the album Arizona Bay by Bill Hicks, that is essentially what this song is derived from. The song "Third Eye" is also a partial tribute to Hicks and his beliefs about hallucinogenic drugs.

Maynard is a prophet | Reviewer: Bible Thumper | 4/6/13

Maynard sees LA sinking into a black hole. He's warning fake folks learn to swim as this shithole of a town goes down. In other words, leave Sodom & Gomorrah as fast as you can.

world is gonna end or at least change alot of people arent gonna wanna change an will not be fit for whats ahead. they can learn to swim or just sit back others as the true meek mother earth as they drown along with their egos. just my take ;)

three words maynard says sum up this song for me, "Learn To Swim". I don't think my take represents his meaning, but for me it represents abandoning dependency upon material objects and becoming self-reliant. Learn To Swim. Those worlds will remain with me all of my life.

Bill Hicks!!! Bill Hicks had a joke about arizona bay and how california was going to fall off the edge of the US. Tool loved Bill Hicks they even had a picture of him on their inserts. And to answer Bryan the reason Tool doesn't appear in any of their videos is they want people to focus on the music not on the people singing it.

Meaning | Reviewer: Sophie | 5/1/10

All of you are being ridiculous. It's a song about the end of the world. He's saying that people worry about insignificant, material things. As a city, LA is one of the most materialistic, fake places in the US, and he is glad that the world is ending so all the morons there will die.

lol | Reviewer: Anonymous | 3/8/10

this song is about how he hates the way society is now and wants it to end. btw the mayan calendar and 2012 is bullshit. the only reason people think the world is going to end is because the mayan calendar stops at 2012. do you know why? its because it was written on a rock and rocks dont have an infinite amount of space. there was no more room on the rock so they couldnt write anymore.

In my opinion most people are wrong, if youve heard of the San Adreas fault, in my opinion this song means that the land inside the border of the San Adread fault is going to plunge into the ocean like a enima. For example:
1st example:Part of a person that has a enima goes away with the water.
2nd example: The part of America with the San Adreas fault will go plunge into the ocean like a Enima.
Also hinting at the part:
"Learn to swim.

Cuz I'm praying for rain
And I'm praying for tidal waves
I wanna see the ground give way.
I wanna watch it all go down.
Mom please flush it all away.
I wanna see it go right down.
I wanna watch it go right in.
Watch you flush it all away."
AND
"I wanna see it all come down.
put it down.
suck it down.
flush it down."

And im assuming that hes saying all the shit "the people" are going with the land into the ocean in the enima. Im not saying im right, but id like to see a better answer

come on people this song its about the end of the capitalism, the end of this fucking system, were you have to buy more than what you need..."welcome any change my friend"...he talks about "mom" refeering to mother earth, she will "comin' round to put it back the way it thought to be"...the maya┬┤s (an old culture from latin america) had a very especific calendar (more than ours) and they told us that in 2012 its going to happend something big..."watch the weather change"

i think LA is used symbolically as a representive of our culture. he keeps saying he wants to get rid of all of this bullshit that has grown popular in our culture, at least in america. i mean, it's obviously meaning more than he is simply saying, because he bothers to say not to just call him pessimistic but read between the lines, which he normally doesn't have to tell a tool fan but he does.

Tool videos | Reviewer: Bryan | 2/23/08

Tool doesn't appear an any of their videos. I'm not sure why exactly, but it's for a certain reason. As previously mentioned they haven't appeared in any of their videos except for "Hush" off their first album Opiate. That video actually has meaning to the song as they are all naked except for a parental advisory box on their midsections. The song is about cencorship and how its bullshit.

Arizona Bay | Reviewer: The Goat Boy | 1/9/08

Keenan incorporates into the lyrics part of comedian Bill Hicks' "Arizona Bay" routine.
Bill Hicks was a friend of the band. Tool intended to raise awareness about Hicks' material and ideas, because they felt that Tool and Hicks "were resonating similar concepts".

"Ahhh, it's gone, it's gone, it's gone...All the shitty shows are gone, all the idiots screaming in the fucking wind are dead, I love it...leaving nothing but a cool, beautiful serenity called Arizona Bay. That's right, when L.A. falls in the fucking ocean and is flushed away, all it will leave is Arizona Bay." -- Bill Hicks

well all tool songs are complicated....
like this, the video does have a meaning because the world is constantly changing and he doesnt want it to happen which the lyrics are discribing or it could be so simple you didnt look beind the box ;D
if you find out tell me because i wanna know

Question Below. | Reviewer: Well | 11/6/07

If you haven't noticed, as far as every music video of Tool I've seen, no video relates to the literal meaning and moral of the song. Unless, of course, as Tool likes to give it, they are relating it in the most unorthodox manner, causing you to look outside the box - WAY outside of the box - to understand it.

Wat up with video | Reviewer: pooskillet777 | 7/16/07

wats up with the vidoeo it doesnt talk about LA and stuff it just shows a guy throwing this alien thing agaisnst the walls
