83 Lyrics - John Mayer
Review The Song (14)
I've these dreams of
Walking home
Home where it used to be
And everything is
As it was
Frozen in front of me
Here I stand
6 feet small
romanticizing years ago
but it's a bitter sweet feeling hearing
"Wrapped Around Your Finger" on the radio
and these days
I wish I was 6 again
Oh make me a red cape
I wanna be Superman
Oh, if only my life was more like 1983
all these things would be more like they
were at the start of me
had it made in 83
thinking bout my brother Ben
I miss him every day
He looks just like his brother John
But on an 18 month delay
Here I stand
6 feet small
and smiling cause I'm scared as hell
kind of like my life is like a sequel to a movie
where the actor's names have changed
oh well
well these days
I wish I was 6 again
Oh make me a red cape
I wanna be Superman
Oh, if only my life was more like 1983
all these things would be more like they
were at the start of me
If my life was more like 1983
plot a course to the source of the
purest little part of me
and most my memories
have escaped me
or confused themselves within dreams
if heaven's all we want it to be
send your prayers to me
care of 1983
you can paint that house a rainbow of colors
rip out the floorboards
replace the shutters but
that's my plastic in the dirt
whatever happened to my
whatever happened to my
whatever happened to my lunchbox
when came the day that it got
thrown away and don't you think I should have had some say
in that decision
If only my life (repeated till fade)
Walking home
Home where it used to be
And everything is
As it was
Frozen in front of me
Here I stand
6 feet small
romanticizing years ago

I was born 83 and I'm glad I was born during 80's. I just listened to it again recently and reminded me of how 80's was like and felt proud about being born in 83. I just LOVE his amazing voice and the lyrics.

Powerful lyrics. For those who weren't born in the 70's, he only makes one very specific reference to life in 1983 - "Wrapped Around Your Finger" was a song by the Police (Sting's old band - Google it if you don't know about them, they are awesome as well) and radio was the ONLY way many of us heard new music back then. Hard to believe. :) This song also reminds me of The Old Apartment by BNL.
Amazing! | Reviewer: Anonymous | 10/17/11
This song has a lot of sentimental meaning for me. Everytime I listen to it, I feel like Im transported back to when I was young girl wishing for everything to stay the same. It is so beautifully written. John Mayer is brilliant.

wow this song is just amazing. it is one of my favorite older songs. I like it because i can atually relate to this one, unlike all the ones about love. I'm 15 I don't know what love is. But I do know what its like to want to be 6 again I mean who doesn't.
Nice work John!

he wasn't born in 1983.. he was born in 1977. you can figure it out by listening to the song and reading the lyrics. he's talking about being 6 in 1983. wow

This song is proof of John Mayer's genius... it's a perfect combination of effortless guitar, insightful lyrics, and his amazing voice. SO GOOD.
Definitely listen to every Mayer song you can or you'll be missing out. And he's FANTASTIC in concert!
The song is called '83 because he was six that year. The song is about wishing he were six again...

Such simple but powerful lyrics.
John doesn't actually write lyrics in my opinion. It's sheer poetry. If ever he lost his voice (God forbid) he'd make an awesome poet-writer. I hear he's writing a novel anyway.
83 refers to the year 1983 and he says in the song "I wish I was six again" so...

"I mean what the hell wht it "83" supposed to mean"
-pretty sure he was born in '83

1 word: WOW. Just listen to it. I mean, forget the title: "83", I mean what the hell what it "83" supposed to mean, rigth? Wrong! God, how does he do it? His lyrics sound simple yet so profound-it just makes me speechless. Others with the easy going melodies and catchy rythm never fail to inspire and impress me. Amazing, he is what I call a "true artist". So very talented. Please, do me a favour and listen to him.
Others I recommend (my favourites among all) are: No Such Thing, Clarity, Why Georgia, 3x5, Split Screen Sadness. Heck just listen to all of them, you won't regret it I swear.
